👋 Hello! Welcome to Chamber documentation!
What is Chamber?
At the very core, Chamber is an encrypted file-vault tool to keep your data safe. However, Chamber is much more than just that.
🌟
If you can’t wait to start using Chamber, jump over to installation.
Chamber has an interesting origin. It originated from the need for a universal (cross-platform), reliable method of keeping files encrypted, while making it easy to access the files both locally and remotely without needing to perform complicated setup rituals. Right now, Chamber is fulfilling the most pressing requirements laid out in the its original inspiration. Below is the set of features focusing on the pain-points left by existing tools in this space.
Features
- Easy to Use - There are numerous encryption tools already out there and encryption in itself has been here since ages. And even now, a easy-to-use encryption tool is rather difficult to get by. Chamber is simple. Download, Launch and Use. There is not even the need to install it. In fact, we don’t have installers.
- Cross Platform - Chamber runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, on Intel/AMD and ARM64 architectures too. That, along with ease of use makes Chamber one of a kind.
- Mounting not required - Chamber does not require you to mount the Chamberfile (the vault file) that it creates. Hence it can be used on computers where you are not the admin. This sets Chamber apart from all the other existing solutions for file-encryption.
- Remote Web Access - Chamber actually launches a web server and opens the UI in a web browser. What that means is that it is very easily accessible over the web, if you want to host it on a server. Also, the Web UI is responsive and you can access your content using any of your devices (in practical sense; your AC can’t use Chamber yet, sorry)!
- Zero-Peek Hostable - As a direct result of the above 2 features (no insistence on mounting the vault and ability to serve over the web) allows Chamber to enable Zero-Peek Hosting. You can store the Chamberfile and run Chamber on a machine and access the files locally or remotely and no one, including an IT admin or the hosting provider entity can access your secret files. This ability/behavior also automatically protects you against a malicious program or script which might want to copy over the files contained in the vault over to another server.
- Auto-Resizable - Unlike other existing solutions, Chamberfiles are not limited by their initial size. In fact we do not ask you for an initial size when you create a Chamberfile. You can add more files to the vault and the file size increases to fit in more content. Similarly, you can delete files from within your vault and ask Chamber to compact the vault file and reclaim the free space.
- Works on CLI - Chamber comes with the ability to work with your files using CLI. For the times when you cannot launch a web server, or do not have the ability to start a GUI (for example, when in recovery mode on a system which cannot start its GUI shell), Chamber comes with CLI commands which can be used to still put in, or take out your files from within the vault. This behavior can also help in automating certain actions using other programs and scripts.
